Ice road across Lake Pielinen

The Koli ice road on Lake Pielinen in Eastern Finland is one of the four ice roads maintained by the Finnish Road Administration. Being 7km long it is the longest public ice road in Finland.

The ice road begins from the Loma-Koli camping ground and ends in the Vuonislahti harbour in Lieksa. The road is opened as soon as the thickness of ice reaches the minimum of 40 cm. The speed limit on the road is 50km/h and the maximum vehicle weight permitted is 3 tonnes. The vehicles must have a distance of at least 50 meters between them. Overtaking and stopping on the road are forbidden.

In the summer you can take a car ferry to travel over Lake Pielinen but in the winter, as soon as the ice is thick enough, you can drive across the lake.
