Kalajoki is all about the sea, every season is gifted with its own change. In the winter the sea freezes, spring sees ice sheets melt, the summer is for swimming, and the autumn enthrals with its moody waves.
Bring the Sea into your holidays: Take a trip by boat to the historical light house island or take the guided visit to the Rahja archipelago, or wander along one of the many hiking trails that hug the shoreline. 8 km long Hiekkasärkkät duckboard Trail travels the shore area of Hiekkasärkät to Keihäslahti Bay. This is easy access trail and so children's buggies will pass. Keihäslahti has a Lapp pole tent, a bird observation tower and a campfire site. 20 km long Siiponjoen polku Trail starts at Tapion Tupa. It travels via gorgeous pine forests down to the Siiponjoki river valley. Along this trail there are two leanto shelters and a Lapp pole tent. In the Rahja archipelago, in a sheltered, shallow bay between Pappilankari Rock and the mainland, is a Boat Nature Trail some 10 km long, which you can explore by rowboat or canoe. You could learn a little about the nature and sand dunes of the Bothnian Bay, also introduce yourself to the traditional fishing culture at the Kalajoki Marine Nature Center. For a rainy day there is an indoor children's play corner and fairytale path. No entrance fee. Ask for guided tours! Have you ever tried Nordic walking? If you arrive in Finland this summer and see people walking with ski poles - You've just witnessed Nordic walking. It is easier than cross - country skiing and more effective than conventional walking. Developed in Finland decades ago, Nordic walking is a great all - round form of exercise that you can enjoy alone or with others. All you need are poles and a path, and off you go. Walking poles can be hired at hotels. VISIT NORDIC FITNESS SPORTS PARK! Come and learn Nordic walking now, or test your skills on our trails. Hiekkasärkät Nordic Sports Park has 8 different trails each demanding a different level of fitness all are clearly signposted. Enjoy the coastal views on 2-12 km long walks at your own pace. NORDIC WALKING began in Kalajoki. In the 1930'when Kalajoki's world champion skier Jussi Kurikkala used ski poles to practising on the Hiekkasärkät sand dunes. Exploring nature by hiking or bicycling is easy along well marked nature trails. There are plenty routes for hiking and Nordic Walking in Kalajoki Hiekkasärkät area. Hiking is one of the best ways to get the most of Kalajoki's great outdoors. As ever, it pays to be prepared, so make sure you read guides and study maps beforehand. In Kalajoki, in order to conserve the beaches visitors can use wooden walkways (duckboards) that extend many kilometres. Picture in your mind the beautiful sea view offered by the 6 km long sand dune beach, which sets one's mind at rest, walking along the wooden paths on the beach, feel the sand between your toes and summer nights when the sun never sets. Take a tour in the Nordic walking fitness Park, walk or run, take short exhilarating hiking tours. You can also play beach-volley, beach-football, bike, kayaking in the Rahja archipelago, swim in the pool indoors or outdoors, take in some ice swimming, play tennis, play frisbee golf.Skiing on the ice
Winter in Kalajoki takes you on frozen seas, ski tracks and ice safaris
You could use snow mobiles, a dog sledge and snow shoes to head out on an ice fi shing trip in the spring sun shine. The fabulous ski trails and sparkling frozen sea promise successful ski trips. Ski on well-maintained trails for hours and enjoy the wintry Finnish countryside, forest and sea. on the way are plenty of shelters and rest stops so you can take a picnic with you. Kalajoki has 202 km of sign posted ski trails, 45 km of which have night lights. Take a snowmobile all the way to the ice-covered sea – there are over 100 kilometres of snow mobile routes. You can even ski on the ice in the wintertime.

In summertime there are many different events every weekend, with music, unusual but always entertaining sporting competitions such as the sandy Olympics, Kalajoki X-Games and events arranged by different groups who want to have some fun in the sun!
The most popular events are the Finnish Mid-summer festival for those who wish to rock-out on the beach and our Venetian carnival at the end of August, when hundreds of candles and lanterns light up the beach to create a beautiful tribute to the summer and an enchanting night event. We arrange events also for your own group as you like. Come and find your own event!
