Finland's West Coast

Suomen Länsirannikko

Major Region

Finland's long West Coast offers a cavalcade of culture, history and natural landscapes that range from the archipelago in the south to the open plains of Ostrobothnian to the rolling fells in the north.

The West Coast is an ideal destination for families and anyone interested in culture and history. Bring your own car or rent one and drive from one charming historical wooden town to the next, feasting on fresh smoked fish along the way. In many places, there is a distinct sense of history meeting the present. For example, the small Kalla islands, granted a degree of autonomy by the Swedish crown in the 1720s, have retained a number of quaint old buildings as well as their unique maritime identity.

There's something for everyone here.

Motor sport fanatics can drive a real F1 racing car or test their skills on one of the best karting tracks in Europe. Nature lovers can follow the spectacular spring and autumn bird migrations, experience the unique, quiet beauty of the Finnish countryside, and hike in a national park. If it's pure relaxation you want, try a spa or unwind on a lighthouse island, far away from everything.

The West Coast also caters to music tastes of all kinds.

In the summer you can listen to everything from jazz, blues and rock to chamber music and folk music from around the globe. Always wanted to be a rock star? Test your chops at the Air Guitar World Championships. Or, if dancing is your thing, there are plenty of dance halls where you can try out your tango steps the whole night through.

Not enough? Then why not spend your time getting familiar with the highly valued arts and crafts of the West Coast.
