Kuusamo is located on the Arctic Circle approximately 800 km from Helsinki. The Kuusamo Lapland region's natural adventures and activities are usually enjoyed within the boundaries of national parks (Oulanka National Park, Riisitunturi National Park, Pyhä -Luosto National Park and Syöte National Park). Oulanka National Park is a PAN Parks certified area of 270 km2 bordering Russia. It is famous for its diverse river landscape, wide variety of bird species and rare plants. Finland's most famous trekking trail - the over 80 kilometres long Karhunkierros Trail is located in the Oulanka National Park. As an easier and shorter alternative is the 12-kilometre-long Pieni Karhunkierros Trail. There are also many other shorter trails to choose from in Kuusamo for an enjoyable day out.
Kuusamo is a cross-country skier's paradise: large network of trails crisscross the spectacular landscape. Downhill skiers and snowboarders will enjoy Ruka. The Ruka Ski Resort offers 29 slopes, 20 ski lifts, a freestyle centre and many other services for all kinds of guests. The centre of Ruka is going through a major change to create a cosy pedestrian Ruka Village. The newest hotel Ruka Village will be opened in autumn 2009. Ruka is an all-year-round holiday resort, offering also much to do in the summer time. The FIS Ruka Nordic Opening world cup is held every year in November with world's best athletes competing. The network of local activity organisers is diverse and highly professional. The all year round services are of world-class quality: snow activities (reindeer and husky safaris, snowmobile excursions, snowshoe walking) and summer activities (hiking, fishing, canoeing, river rafting, Nordic walking, biking and bird watching) as fine examples of different activities. From Kuusamo, you can easily continue over the eastern border in Kuusamo-Suoperä to original Karelian villages, forests and prized fishing waters in Russia.
