In Kilpisjärvi area, by the border of Sweden and Norway, you can find the highest flat-top mountains in Finland. One of the most popular hiking paths in Finland leads from the village of Kilpisjärvi to Halti, the highest mountain in Finland. In this region you are sure to relax when you reach the far wilderness areas, because your cell phone won't find a network! The ski season lasts until June in the remote mountain area. The crystal clear wilderness lakes in Kilpisjärvi are valued by many fishermen. The population of Kilpisjärvi consists of about 100 permanent inhabitants.
The municipality of Enontekiö consists of small villages of which the largest is called Hetta. It's population is only 800 inhabitants. Hetta is located by the lake Ounasjärvi and its landmark is the mountain Pyhäkero. Hetta is an authentic Lappish village where you can hear and see Sámi culture. If you go on a snowmobile safari, skiing or hiking you are almost sure to see some reindeers digging lichen. One way to discover the beautiful mountain area and the national park in the Southern part of Enontekiö, is to follow the Hetta-Pallas hiking path, which is accessible in the summer and winter. 70% of the surface of Enontekiö municipality is protected.

Paradise for nature lovers
Whether you enjoy summer activities like white water kayaking, fishing, hiking or trekking, Enontekiö-Kilpisjärvi offers you a great variety of alternatives. You can start a kayaking trip from the Kilpisjärvi and start paddling the very challenging Könkämäeno which turns into river Muoniojoki in Karesuvanto.
Or do you fancy fishing in the wilderness lakes some arctic char? Take a helicopter or aircraft flight from Kilpisjärvi to the remote fell lakes, or try your luck in many of the rivers.
The nature of Enontekiö is very changing. In the east by Kalmankaltio you can find amazing sand and juniper areas that are perfect for mountain biking. Kilpisjärvi offers the highest fells and many wilderness cabins for hikers. Also along the Hetta-Pallas hiking path, you can find wilderness cabins providing shelter.

Arctic winter
Winter lasts 6 months in Enontekiö-Kilpisjärvi region. The polar night starts at the end of November and lasts until end of January. This is magical time - there is something very special in the soft light of the daytime. The changing colours in the sky play a magnificent scenery. You can observe a full moon lightning the skies even in the daytime, stars twinkling in the evening and Nothern Lights illuminating dark winter nights.
The ski season starts already in November and end in the beginning of May. Hetta Hiihtomaa is perfect ski station for families and those enjoying cross country skiing. Kilpisjärvi offers challenges for those who enjoy free riding or skiing in the fells. You can also ski from Hetta to Pallas, the distance is 55km. On the way there is cabins every 10km or so.
In Enontekiö-Kilpisjärvi there is about 600km marked snowmobile tracks. Many companies offer guided snowmobile safaris.
One way to discover the snow covered forests and frozen lakes, is a husky safari. Husky safaris are available both in Hetta and Kilpisjärvi.
