Summer in Lake Saimaa

Saimaa is Finland's most extensive lake system, stretching in an aquatic labyrinth through the eastern part of the country. The seemingly endless lakes are punctuated by several communities that come to magical life in the summer, from Imatra and Lappeenranta in the south to the town of Savonlinna with its medieval island castle. The Saimaa Canal is an important trade route and passes through Russian territory to reach the Baltic, and visitors can enjoy unhurried, calming cruises along the canal as well as between the various Finnish Saimaa towns. Almost 40 per cent of this area is covered with water, making it the perfect area for booking a lakeside cottage or farm holiday, hiking in the Linnansaari and Kolovesi national parks, or taking a Saimaa cycling tour.

Summer is a special season in the lake area. The long winter is behind and spring with its traditional high lights and feasts have prepared the way for the frizzy summer. From June to August, Finns enjoy the everlasting days, the vital green color of the nature and the shimmering of the waters. The cultural events are numerous and plenty of them have nothing to envy on a worldwide scale.
